Common questions & answers

Curious about how Switch Mentoring works? You’ll find answers to some of the most common questions below. If there’s anything else you’d like to know, we’re always happy to chat.

Who is Switch Mentoring for?

Switch Mentoring supports children and young people in primary and secondary schools who find it difficult to thrive in traditional classroom settings. Our programmes are particularly effective for students with challenges such as anxiety, low self-esteem, school avoidance, social difficulties, or emotional regulation issues.

How does sport help with mentoring?

Sport provides a positive and engaging environment where young people can connect with mentors in a natural way. Physical activity releases endorphins that reduce stress, improve mood, and help build trust. Through sport, students learn resilience, teamwork, communication, and self-discipline — skills that transfer directly to their education and everyday lives.

Do you only work one-to-one, or are there group options?

We offer both. Mentors can work individually with students for targeted support, or in small groups to build teamwork and social skills. Programmes are flexible and can take place at school sites or at neutral locations, depending on what works best for the young person.

What kind of outcomes can we expect?

Mentoring can transform a young person’s relationship with education. Schools often see improvements in attendance, behaviour, confidence, and emotional well-being. Over time, students develop a positive identity as learners, greater resilience, and stronger life skills that support both academic progress and personal growth.

“Every mentoring journey starts with a conversation.”
